DIY Raised Bed Using Concrete Blocks

By Manuela Williams

DIY Concrete Block Raised Bed

Happy Weekend Everyone!  I’ve been working in my vegetable garden getting my raised beds ready for planting. My raised beds are made out of wood (here’s my post on how to build a raised bed with wood), but I thought some of you might like a tutorial on how to make a raised bed out of concrete blocks. This tutorial is from Retro Ranch Revival and is part of my DIY Saturday Series  where I share helpful tutorials and ideas that I find.

how to make raised beds from cinder blocks

I had a few raised beds made out of concrete blocks a few years back and they worked really well. Some of you may remember that I had a pumpkin that started growing in an empty hole in a block and I had a square pumpkin that year!

It’s pretty easy to make a raised bed with cinder blocks. I don’t think it’s less expensive than making one with wood, but I did find it easier.

How To Make A Raised Bed From Cinder Blocks

Directions:

      1. Just be sure to decided on your concrete block raised bed garden design before your start – you don’t want to have to move those concrete blocks more than you have to!
      2.  If you plan on building more than one raised bed, be sure that you leave space in between the beds so that you’re comfortable working in your garden
      3. Soil is always very important in vegetable gardening, even more so when you use a raised bed (which is essential a very large container). Get the best soil that you can afford. I like this one –Raised Bed Soil.
      4. Raised beds are great for the Square Foot Gardening Technique.. I have a free Square Foot Garden Planner Printer to help you design your vegetable garden.

Definitely! The concrete ones are easy to put together since you just need to lay them out. Although Home Depot and Lowe’s have raised bed kits that are very easy to put together. I got 2 on clearance last year and was able to put them together by myself. So that might be an idea for you.

Manuela, you were the inspiration for my garden beds last year. I’m looking forward to adding a couple more this year and need a (preferably lovely) fence & gate to go around it (pesky deer!). Thanks for sharing. Your blog is one of my all-time faves. Happy gardening!

Thank you! I’m so glad my blog is helpful to you. We actually have to re-do one of the picket fence gates because “somebody” chewed the bottom of a couple of pickets off so he could get into the garden and chase squirrels! So I’m trying to decide if I want another picket fence or something cuter. I did a post on garden gates a while back and there are so many cute ones – it’s hard to decide!

We are getting ready to get our raised beds in shape and then a few more weeks and we will be able to plant. Great idea to use blocks. Our raised strawberry bed is block and it works so well!

I’m having fun with my raised beds this year…every year it is something different. But this year, I decided why I like the raised beds… easier on the weeds. Can’t say NO WEEDS…but there aren’t as many as when I tilled and planted straight to ground.
I’ll have to see this block design again…if I can get my hands on some…I wouldn’t mind going with that material.

    By the way..
I love following your gardening board on pinterest! You find the coolest stuff Manuela!
    …happy gardening and happy pinning!

That is actually a great idea! I love the cap they put on top to make it finished looking.
