A Cheerful Summer Cabinet

By Manuela Williams

white vintage sconce with red crystals

If you checked in on my Facebook page yesterday you know that we had a rainy day and that I decided to putter around and play with my china cabinet.  Even though the rain ended mid afternoon, it was still a good day to stay inside. The humidity was just awful!

Here’s how it came out.

cottage style china cabinet

I think it looks nice and summery now.  I hadn’t changed the dishes since last fall because I was busy getting the house ready to sell!

red polka dot plates

Which is unusual for me because I have a few dishes – {cough, cough} and the only way I can have them out to appreciate them is rotate them seasonally.

I love cottage style decorating and really enjoyed my rainy gloomy day but I’m back outside today!

Love the polka dot dishes, Manuela! The different patterns of red and white you have look so good together in your cabinet. I’d say it was a good day spent indoors!

That IS cheerful! I love the mix of the different patterns and the red pompom rick rack. We had some rain here earlier in the week — substantial downpours, but nothing like “a rainy day”. Hoping for some more rain today — that would mean a whole week without having to run the sprinkler!

Do you use the dishes you rotate into the china cabinet?(like on a daily basis, or for some special meals?)

I use the serving platters all the time, also the teacups. The plates not so much (except at Thanksgiving I use my Johnson Brothers Friendly Village set). I have a set of black transferware that I use for my everyday dishes that I do not use for display.

Yes, it does look delightfully cheerful and summery. Why don’t I think of these things? It’s been raining all week and all I can think is how nice a nap sounds. ☺

I just love the way you decorated your cabinet. Looks like we have very similar taste. Can you tell me where you found the dishes with the flags and gingham trim and did you get them this season? I do believe I “need” some like that.

I’ve had those dishes for quite some time. I got them from Victoria Trading Co. Catalog. Not sure if they still carry them.

I love it! That’s the sort of cheeriness that I’m going for on my baker’s rack but still not quite achieving. I guess it’s the cabinet itself that makes such a difference.

I like your cheerful summertime display. What a fun way to spend a rainy day! I admire the way you change out your dishes seasonally–my china cabinet looks nice, but the dishes are in the same place they’ve been for the last five years, I think!
