The weather is finally a bit cooler – YAY!! In the morning it feels quite like fall but by afternoon it’s warm – but not hot and humid – so I’ve been trying to get caught up on all the gardening projects I had planned for the summer.

A little project on my to do list was just to hang the window box my husband made me on my barn.
I love the dusty blue against the red of barn!
I filled it with some plants. Trailing vinca on the ends, yellow pansies, and an ornamental mustard in the middle. These should last through spring unless we have a particularly cold winter.
My husband is going to make me some shutters to add to the sides. The only problem is that I don’t remember what combination of paints I used on the planter since I used a little of this and that!
I was going to remove the grass from under the arbor and lay pavers but that’s out of the budget now. Besides I decided mowing the grass was easier anyway. I’m just going to find some easy to move chairs and a table or maybe just a bench to make a little seating area. I’ll probably move some daylillies or hydrangeas over to plant along the foundation.
I think it’s going to be a cute little seating area when I’m through with it!

Love your barn. It’s going to look cute with the sitting area.

It looks lovely! Nothing better than a red barn 🙂

That looks great! We are having a little cool down here, also, so I’m trying to get caught up in the very neglected garden and yard also. Your barn, with the arbor and window box, looks so pleasant — a lovely place to sip some tea and peruse some good books or magazines.

Love your little barn and planter! I saw once where someone covered grass with black plastic over the winter and by the spring, the grass was dead and easy to remove. Maybe instead of pavers, use a load of crushed granite or gravel for a patio until funding for pavers come in! I LOVE crushed granite patios! Reminds me so much of Mediterranean gardens!
Manuela says
I love them too! There’s something about walking on the crunch of gravel that I love. If my yard was flatter I would have used it in between my raised beds.

I love your little red barn! Thank goodness for cooler air. I hope to get some energy from it. Your hubby did a great job on the window box too.
Glenda/MidSouth says
Looking good !! You are smart confining the vinca vine to a planter.:D I have some in a flower bed (I did not do that) and is is a constant battle keeping it under control.
Love the cooler temps and lower humidity.
Enjoy your evening.

I’ve probably commented before about your red barn & how much I love it…but now it looks even cuter with your planter box! Your hubby is a handy guy to be able to build something like that. You’re also lucky that your flowers can last through winter.

Hi Manuela, what a cute little barn in the city you have! The whole thing is cute but the window and flower box is the cherry on top
thank you for all your inspiration, I don’t have a bucket of money either and it is nice to see all the pretty things do with more creativity than cash
It is finally getting cooler in OK too, it was 90s this week after way too many 100+ days and tomorrow the high is only predicted to be around 60

I adore your red barn And window box just like all the others! Good job! I too am thrilled that the humidity is gone, seems like I’m a little more motivated to be outside and work on my lawn. I’ve got so much catching up to do.

It’s safe to say that anything you put your hand to is going to look better when you’re finished with it. Your sweet red barn looks so darn cute. Perhaps you could go with some yellow shutters.☺
Manuela says
🙂 I was thinking that too! Yellow shutters might look cheery!

Love the little red barn! That area is going to be a beautiful area to sit when you’re finished.
Cindy says
Your little barn is so cute with the window box and arbor. (Now I want an arbor!) We had window boxes on our tool shed, but after 10 years they got rotten. My husband never got around to replacing them this summer. Now I’ll have to wait til spring 🙂

A great place to relax Manuela! Love that windowbox. Mimi

I love it! And I want it 🙂 This would look great in my yard, but I would probably end up keeping chickens in there!

I love your barn and planter! So chic! It will make a lovely sitting area for sure! Hope you are enjoying this amazing weather we are having.

Keep your eyes open and maybe you’ll find some patio furniture or a bench on the curb one day and have part of your problem solved the most frugal way possible! Your little window box looks too cute.
Manuela says
I agree – believe me I’m always looking at people’s garbage 🙂
Jennifer says
Looks amazing!!! I love it! I still have not decorated my little red building. I need to get on it!

Great Job on the window boxes. I love old windows I knew of a lady that used to take old window and paint flowers in each pane and sold them for 25.00 at our local flea market. i have one of her windows and my husband used it along with some old barn wood and made a water fountain with them. We took it with us to a craft show we had in town and we got alot of interests in it.
Why not start you some Ivy at the bottom of each corner and train it to go up and then you can wind it in and out of the top of your Pergola. I have seen it done like this and some flowers that grown into vines and had that intertwined into the ivy and it really look great.
I can picture an old farm table of some sort and chairs under the pergola with an old tea set and a small quilt on the table as a back drop.

Manuela says
Deana, I planted some yellow jasmine at the base of one corner in May. Hopefully next year it’ll reach the top of the arbor – it’s a fairly quick growing vine here in Georgia. I’d love an old farm table and chairs under there. We were looking at those wooden picnic tables yesterday at Lowe’s since they are on clearance now. I do need something that’s easy to move so I can mow under there.
I’ve seen those windows with flowers etc painted on them. There’s a shop in town that sells them. I wish I was a more talented painter I do a few my self. I’ve always thought they would look nice hanging from my fence.
Pat says
I love that trellis work. We started building one off the front porch, but haven’t finished it yet.
Your’s looks great. I like the window box…
I say, why not a picnic blanket? who needs chairs in a setting that beautiful?
Pat
Manuela says
Thank you Pat! I’m afraid I need something a little easier to get up off of than the ground since my knee injury a year a go. I don’t even like those low Adirondack chairs – too low for me 🙂
Brenda@Coffeeteabooksandme says
I wanted to comment earlier but it has been so busy here.
LOVE the way the barn looks. I’ve been thinking of doing something similar with a window box on the side of our garden shed.
Of course, we are too far north for anything to live through the winter but I like the idea for the rest of the year.
Paula says
Your pergola is going to look great covered in jasmine and will make a great place to relax. The windowbox looks perfect there!
Michele Bergh says
This is adorable. I love the window box on the barn. I just want to come over and sit under the arbor!
