The farmhouse usually had a formal area up front, and a business end (a functional kitchen where harvested produce could be handled and chickens could be plucked, for example). Farmhouse DIY projects are some of the prettiest pieces of décor you can make. Each craft or DIY project will have it’s own list of directions, but we wanted to give you a few pointers before you begin.
- Don’t go for perfect! With other styles, it’s important to keep lines clean and perfect, however, with farmhouse style that is not the case. Embrace imperfections!
- Rough up new wood. If you are working on a wood project and don’t have access to old wood, make your own! Rough it up by hitting it with hammers, screwdrivers, and other items to add dents and scratches. Then stain it and you have a gorgeous piece to use.
- Muted colors are key. It’s very common to stick with muted colors with lots of browns, beige, and tans. Add in small pops of color here and there, but nothing too bright!

A Few More DIY Farmhouse Decor Ideas
Aside from the projects listed above, things to consider incorporating into your home when trying to achieve the farmhouse chic look are a big kitchen sink, white cabinets, painted bead board walls, rustic tables, white stoneware dishes, and gardens. A porch is considered key to the old farmhouse, but since just adding a porch is not always economical (or even possible!), you can freshen up your entryway to create an outdoor to indoor transition area.
