Body butter’s aren’t lotions or creams. They are much more moisturizing! Plus the cocoa in this recipe also gives a light bronzing effect to your skin, just a natural, healthy glow (which in the winter is a lovely benefit on top of it being decadently moisturizing) . Just FYI since it has cocoa powder in it it may stain light clothing.

Homemade Chocolate Whipped Body Butter

Supplies Needed:

1 cup Shea Butter
½ cup Coconut Oil
¼ cup Cocoa powder
2 tsp. vanilla extract

( you can can get the fist three ingredients through Amazon or at health food and grocery stores)

chocolate souffle body butter

Directions:

1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring each time. Continue until completely melted. If you would rather avoid the microwave you can also melt in a small pan over medium low heat, stirring frequently.
2. Allow to cool on counter for 15-20 minutes.
3. Place in refrigerator for 20-30 minutes until it starts to set up, you don’t want it to completely harden over. This is a crucial step. If it’s not chilled properly it won’t whip. Don’t worry if you leave it in too long just remove from fridge and set on the counter until it begins to soften a bit.
4. Mix with a hand mixer or a stand mixer and whip 2 minutes.
5. Add in cocoa powder and vanilla extract, whip until completely combined- mixture should be fluffy and airy.
6. Store in an airtight container in a cool place.
7. If the temperature gets too warm in your home your body butter may become partially liquid, just give it a stir and place in fridge or freezer to firm up a bit.
8. This makes about a pint but depends on how much you whip it.

I keep mine in the bathroom and have no issue with it softening too much. This homemade body butter will keep for a few months and makes an awesome homemade gift!

This look so yummy I want to eat it. How amazing it would smell. I’d be worried about it softening too much here as we got so incredibly hot (today is 37 C but we’ve had over 40 already this year) but I guess I could always keep it in the fridge.

Yes, you could absolutely keep it in the fridge if you see it getting too melty! I’ve also read that adding some beeswax keeps homemade body butter from softening too much in warmer climates. So you might want to research that and give it a try.

I am just wondering if there is any coloring or staining on clothes because of the cocoa powder? I made body butter before and loved it and really like the idea of chocolate scented body butter!!

If you let it soak in on your skin and dry before dressing, it doesn’t stain. I have had a small stain when I didn’t wait to let it get absorbed, but the stain came out easily in the wash.

This butter looks so amazing! I bet it’s so creamy and feels so good as a lotion! I’m a little intimidated by the bronzing part because I’m a little white. Okay, a LOT white! haha
