Homemade Apple Fritters

By Jody Smith

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

Apple and cinnamon are just two flavors that belong together. What’s not to love about a soft, spicy moist inside filled with tender apple bits and a puffed up sugar coated outside? These remind me of the ones my mother used to make when I was a little girl and couldn’t get enough! If you have similar fond fritter memories, or if you’ve never had a fritter before, then you’ve got to whip up a batch of these Homemade Apple Fritters!

I love to make these homemade apple fritters as a special treat with coffee (yes, sometimes I make them for breakfast)! They also make a great snack or dessert!

Homemade Apple Fritters

Ingredients

3-4 large apples
1 tsp. lemon juice
¼ cup brown sugar
1 cup all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
¼ tsp. salt
½ cup milk
1 egg, large
½ tsp. vanilla

Coating
½ cup powdered or granulated sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon

oil for frying

Directions

Homemade apple fritters

1. Peel, core, and dice apples, toss with lemon juice and brown sugar, set aside.
2. In a separate bowl combine powdered or granulated sugar and additional cinnamon for coating.
3. Preheat oil in a small pot to 350 degrees. You want the oil to be a few inches deep, so you may need to use 2-4 cups of oil.
4. Line a large plate with paper towels to drain.

Homemade apple fritters7. Drop mixture into hot grease by the spoonful- they do not need to be large as you will see them quickly puff up quite a bit. And if you make them too big, they won’t cook evenly all the way through, leaving the insides too soft. About a teaspoon of the mixture is a good amount to use for each fritter.

Homemade apple fritters8. Cook until golden- after about 1 minute on one side, flip and brown the other side. Do not crowd the pot, I recommend no more than 3-4 at a time.
9. Remove from oil, drain on paper towel covered plate for 1 minute.

Homemade apple fritters10. While still hot- toss in the cinnamon sugar coating.

Then you can enjoy your yummy homemade apple fritters!

The combination of apples and cinnamon in these homemade apple fritters is delicious! These make a great dessert, snack, or even a good breakfast treat!
