Goodwill + Spray Paint=Easy Makeover

By Manuela Williams

A few weeks ago I was browsing my local Goodwill and saw this fabulous object.

A wooden birdcage!

I have a thing for birdhouses/birdcages so this one had to come home with me especially since this big ol’ thing was only $5.95!

It’s brown and I  wasn’t sure what color to paint it (cause I can never just leave anything the way it is) . So paint I must. But should it be red which is my favorite color or maybe yellow (my second favorite color), black,  white or maybe aqua?

I decided to just keep it simple, so two coats of white spray paint is all that it got. I figure white goes with everything, its fresh and summery and at least it’s primed in case I decide to paint it a different color later on. I have been known to change my mind.

Here it is on my buffet table out on my screened porch.

I’ve decided that I really like Geraniums (they last a long time here in Georgia). They just seem like such cheerful flowers and come in quite a few lovely colors. This one is pink and white.

I love makeovers that use spray paint – so quick and easy!

What a great find that was! Your color choice is excellent, practical, too. Looks great out there on your porch.

Great find! I love to use spray paint to make over items!

I think geraniums are a charming flower – you’re right they are cheerful!

Charming is the right word for them! They just seem old fashioned to me – probably because they’ve been around since forever. I always have them in a container in front of my front door but this year I’ve decided to also do them on my deck and porch.

I love the bird cage and I really love your vignette on your screened porch. It’s so bright and summery. Geraniums are one of my favorites too as they are vigorous and last all season. Enjoy!

What a score, Manuela! I probably would have gone white, too, but I think the red would work well for you also. I love that mirror, too!

Thank you Kathy. That mirror has been several different colors. Last year I painted it blue – another easy spray paint project.

What a great find especially for the price. I have buying geraniums this year too. They bloom year round here in California so I can always count on them for a pop of color. I love the happy mix of color on your buffet table.

What serendipity! I don’t often find such sweet surprises when I visit the thrift stores. This birdcage is beautiful!

Me ~ green….with envy that is! ;~P Some of you gals have to most wonderful GW stores! Our goofy little stores only have tons and tons of clothes and books! And beyond salvation furniture! Your birdhouse is simply spendid whatever the color! I love birds, birdhouses, birdbaths, birdfeeders, etc. Really a sweet find!
Thanks for visiting at The Barnyard for the Barn Hop! Hope you will come visit me again!

My Goodwill has gone through phases. It was just awful when it first opened, nothing but trash really. Then it got really really good. I could go every day and there would be stuff from all the major stores, Pottery Barn, TJX, IKEA – you name it. Then it got bad again. Now it’s hit or miss. Which is fine since I’m really trying to not add too much new “stuff” without getting rid of some old things first!

What a great deal! Geraniums (especially red and the really bright pink, oh — and also scented geraniums) are some of my favorite flowers. I have to wait until we get back from the beach to get some though — don’t want to overwhelm my friends with watering while we’re gone — they already have to deal with cats, chickens, the vegetable and herb garden . . . .

It’s beautiful! I wouldn’t have been able to leave that there, either, especially not for that price. Did you mosaic the top of your table yourself? It looks really pretty. Love the yellow and blue.

Thank you! Yes I did mosaic the top myself. There’s a link in the post to the one where I show how I did it.

I bought a really cute table for just a few dollars at Goodwill last week. I was going to paint it but my husband (as usual) had a fit. You have to be fortunate not to have married someone with a degree in wood science and furniture engineering… they do not like the painting of wood.

As it turned out, the table did look nice just as it was in my living room but probably because no other furniture has ever been painted… sigh.

However, I have been inspired by your garden and this year I planted FLOWERS in with all the veggies in the raised beds even though my husband shakes his head at the very sight of it all. It looks lovely and it makes me smile. 🙂

A little bit of white spray paint was all this bird house needed for a quick freshening up. It looks great on your porch. Why is it that I never see anything that great at Goodwill? Lucky you!

Your goodwill always prices things way lower than mine does. Ocassionally I find a good deal, but not often.

A hint for the geraniums which is working beautifully with mine thus far . Granny told me that my great grandmother always put more water over her tea bags after she’d made tea. She’d let it just sit about 24 hours then pour the thin tea water over her geraniums. This supposedly promotes healthy foliage and generates more blooms. Well I’ll say it’s always worked just fine for me!

I haven’t had geraniums in a few years but I bought a big hanging basket with three lovely magenta plants in it and so far it’s blooming beautifully with it’s sips of tea.

Love your bird cage. It looks clean and fresh painted white. What a great price, too, I seriously need a road trip to an area with better thrifting.

I can’t believe you found that bird cage at Goodwill–you were a smart girl to snatch that up! It looks great white, although somehow I’m thinking that if it stays at your house very long, it’ll go through some color changes along the way! 🙂
