A Little Painted Chair Makeover

By Manuela Williams

Last December I mentioned that I was going to be turning our guest bedroom into an office/craft room for myself. I’m so excited to finally be working on this project! We already took the bed out and moved my craft table in. I have a lot to do in there but the first thing I did was at the request of my husband. He needs a chair  to sit in to put on his shoes etc because that room has always multi-tasked as his dressing area.

I’m sure you have rooms like that too! His closet is in this room (because the closet in the master bedroom is too teeny for two people). I had a chair in another part of the house that wasn’t getting used much so I decided it would be a perfect chair for him in my office.

But I wanted it to be in the happy colors that I intend on using in my space so I gave it a quick little makeover.

I had a sample pot of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Provence that I used (which sort of looks like teal/turquoise) and some red buffalo check fabric that I had purchased at Ikea last year (to make curtains).

We now have a chair that will fit in perfectly with the look I’m going for in my soon to be office/craft room!

I have quite a few projects I’ll be doing for that space – unfortunately this is also the time I have to get my vegetable garden ready and planted so most of you know the drill – it’ll be awhile before the whole thing is done!

Thanks for stopping by today!

Oh I just Love this color combo..the red an aqua! I have seen it in this or that fabric line and then every quilt or pillow or what-have-you that is made with it is just so cheerful and bright!

Your chair is lovely, it would fit into my house perfectly! You have used the same fabric that I have in my living room over the windows and will used in my kitchen soon.
I love what you’ve done in there so far.
    Hugs, Cindy

LOL! Yes, well quite a few things from your house would look good in mine!

I love red buffalo check and bought a few yards to make curtains with – which I haven’t done yet 🙂

I will get to mine this spring, I’m hoping. And yes, I think we could swap several things from each others homes and it would look great!

Great chair, Manuela! I loved it in its “before” state, but love the “happy” you gave it with the new color and red and white checked fabric. I’ll look forward to seeing your craft room as it comes along.

Thanks Kathy! Don’t you have a bulletin board or something with that toile fabric?

I have those colors in my bedroom and love them. Did you add a finish over the chalk paint? The chair looks glossy.

    • Manuela says

      April 1, 2013 at 6:18 pm

Yes, I used some clear wax for protection and buffed it a bit.

The chair is functional, stable and serves your husband in a very pretty way, Manela!

I, too, am in the middle of looking at my Guest Room with new eyes. Because it’s so large, I rearranged and defined: I made the left side strictly for guests (although I’m putting the nightstand drawers to good use!), and the right side with the closets are for me!

Although I want to leave one of the two small built-out closets empty for my guests, I also want to eventually have everything stored OUT of my craft/sewing closet. I’m thinking wisely ahead to move #21 (either 2014 or 2015). At that time, I will get a daybed/trundle for our guests and eliminate the full-size bed. I can still leave all my sewing gear “up” and out, but simply rearrange when company comes. Like you always inspire, Manuela, good stewardship is the name of this game!

    Happy week!
    Kelley~

    P. S. I’m probably stating your feelings, too: I can’t wait to be finished and reveal my new space(s), but I’m taking my time and patiently doing it RIGHT!

I love what I am seeing so far. I am a sucker for anything gingham and it works perfectly with the contrast of the turquoise chair. Thanks for sharing at the Cabin this week:) Wanted to let you know I am following you through my reader. I have heard reader going away is just a hoax, so will wait and see before I move to something else. I am enjoying you blog!

What a happy chair!! I love the unexpected whimsy of the red and white check on such a beautifully painted formal chair.
I think I might be a little jealous about you getting to put in your garden now. It will probably be almost 2 months before I can get started. Enjoy!

I adore red and turquoise! I am seriously considering a red and turquoise kitchen. So fabulous to see you combine these two colors. Can hardly wait to see the progress of your room and the garden!

The chair looks great now, but you do such nice stuff, even your before things are nice. 🙂
I’ll be switching to the other reader thingie as you suggest, why can’t they just leave it alone?

I love the color combination. I was so anti-blue for so long because I inherited so much of it with this house. These days, I keep wanting to add it back in.

I like the bones of that chair anyway. I’m looking at a set of shield backs right now and considering them for the dining room.

I love your chair redo! Can’t wait to see how you put your room together. I’m in the process of redoing my office/creative studio. I’ve thought of switching it with our guestroom that doesn’t have guests very often. Grandchildren can handle the smaller room (now my creative studio) and the twin bed that is in the guestroom. Thank you for the information on Google Reader alternatives. I need to make that change soon. I appreciate your input.

The chair looks great! I love the color. Do you have another room that you’re using as a guest room or do you just not have a guest room now?

    • Manuela says

      April 2, 2013 at 9:45 pm

We will not have a separate guest room anymore. We still have ways for people to spend the night here but most of our relatives that visit from out of town like staying in the hotels in Atlanta (we live in the suburbs).
