Apple and cinnamon are just two flavors that belong together. What’s not to love about a soft, spicy moist inside filled with tender apple bits and a puffed up sugar coated outside? These remind me of the ones my mother used to make when I was a little girl and couldn’t get enough! If you have similar fond fritter memories, or if you’ve never had a fritter before, then you’ve got to whip up a batch of these Homemade Apple Fritters!

I love to make these homemade apple fritters as a special treat with coffee (yes, sometimes I make them for breakfast)! They also make a great snack or dessert!
Homemade Apple Fritters
Ingredients
3-4 large apples
1 tsp. lemon juice
¼ cup brown sugar
1 cup all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
¼ tsp. salt
½ cup milk
1 egg, large
½ tsp. vanilla
Coating
½ cup powdered or granulated sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
oil for frying
Directions
1. Peel, core, and dice apples, toss with lemon juice and brown sugar, set aside.
2. In a separate bowl combine powdered or granulated sugar and additional cinnamon for coating.
3. Preheat oil in a small pot to 350 degrees. You want the oil to be a few inches deep, so you may need to use 2-4 cups of oil.
4. Line a large plate with paper towels to drain.
5. Mix together flour, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt.
6. Stir in milk, egg, and vanilla. Finally, fold in diced apples.
7. Drop mixture into hot grease by the spoonful- they do not need to be large as you will see them quickly puff up quite a bit. And if you make them too big, they won’t cook evenly all the way through, leaving the insides too soft. About a teaspoon of the mixture is a good amount to use for each fritter.
8. Cook until golden- after about 1 minute on one side, flip and brown the other side. Do not crowd the pot, I recommend no more than 3-4 at a time.
9. Remove from oil, drain on paper towel covered plate for 1 minute.
10. While still hot- toss in the cinnamon sugar coating.
Then you can enjoy your yummy homemade apple fritters!
