This Week In The Garden: Harvest Time

By Manuela Williams

sunflower peeking over the picket fence

Every morning I go out to see what new menace is trying to eat my veggies! I’ve battled the squash bugs (hand pick and squish), some little red spidery looking things, some other white spidery looking bug and of course trying to keep the various squash from succumbing to powdery mildew. Even with all that – everything is growing beautifully and looking healthy. Here have a look…

ripe red tomatoes in the vegetable garden

These are the first tomatoes to ripen.

beautiful ear of corn ready for picking

Time to pick the corn. Next year I want to grow popcorn.

flowers in containters in the vegetable garden

My containers are filling in so nicely.

orange mini pumpkin on the vine

The first pumpkin.

zuchhini growing in a raised bed

Lots and lots of zucchini! It’s amazing how they grow. One day you look and there’s a tiny one and two days later it’s gigantic!

blue hubbard squash vine growing up a wooden trellis

There’s a Blue Hubbard Squash forming at the end of the vine. In the back there you can see where we’re setting the posts for the garden expansion.

growing potatoes in a grow bag

Potatoes….

potatotes growing in a garbage can

and more potatoes. I didn’t have any empty beds so they’re growing in a grow bag and an old garbage can. I’m using a mix of compost and straw this year. Hopefully there will be lots of taters.

green peppers

There are four kinds of peppers growing. They’ve loved all this hot weather.

tomatillos in a container

Tomatillos next to my lemon tree.

giant sunflowers growing next to corn in a raised bed

Look how big the sunflowers are! All the flowers I planted in between the veggies are blooming! Everything looks so pretty.

white flower at the end of a raised bed

patio herb garden with hand letter herb sign

The herbs that I cook with are  on my deck – close to the kitchen.

growing salad in a self-watering container

As well as this container that has various salad greens.

arch and flowers in the vegetable garden

So that’s how my garden is growing this week!

    Manuela,
Your garden is doing so very nicely.
I love that you have incorporated flowers among the veggies.
That is how the Amish do it around here too
so it makes me feel right at home!

Wow, your garden looks terrific and is so varied! We only grow tomatoes, jalapenos, and herbs. Check out my recipe for Fire Roasted Garden Salsa if you need a great recipe to use up some of your harvest!

Your garden looks great! We harvested potatoes over the weekend. I love to grow them and then dig them up. I remember my Dad grew popcorn in our garden when I was growing up. I need to give that a try too! The heat is about to end my lettuce and spinach so the plan is to pull it out and get some cucumbers and peppers planted in their place.

Wow Manuela! I’m impressed. Everything is growing beautifully. I have never heard of growing potatoes like that Fantastic! I didn’t have tomatoes this year. They succumbed to that white powdery mildew stuff you mentioned. Didn’t have it the year before but the weather this year was different. Now it is just hot, hot, hot and dusty off and on. Bleh! Hope you have a great week. Tammy

Looking at your garden pictures, I have garden envy right now..you are so far ahead in the growing season then we are! I used to grow corn, but it became a battle with the squirrels here, and they were winning. We also have so much shade now there is barely enough to grow tomatoes, that slows growth down too..oh well..I keep trying..can’t keep my hands out of the dirt!
    Love your pictures…

I’m so jealous! We are getting ready to move so no garden for me this year. I love the support you have for your hubbard squash. It looks like it would work well for pumpkins, too. Enjoy your veggies and flowers, your garden is wonderful!

My garden is still in its’ infancy, except for the herbs which are amazing this year. Although my rosemary died, I wonder if it was all that wet weather? I should be able to replace it soon.

My garden is so influenced by yours, from when we built the raised bed a few years ago to growing flowers in with the veggies this year. I can see the marigolds from my kitchen window (they are at the end of the raised beds) and they make me smile. They are so cheerful.

The zinnias are struggling, once again I don’t think they liked being drowned after planting. 🙂

LOVE seeing garden pictures… more ideas to swipe… I mean try.

I’m away again, working, this year – so no vegetable garden for us. But next year is another story.

Your garden looks great! And the variety of things you’re growing is very inspirational. I need to rig up some kind of shade to get my salad greens going again, as heat totally did them in.

Wow…your garden is doing wonderful! We are still having cool & wet weather in the Northwest, so the plants are not doing as well as they should. Praying for some warmth & sunshine soon! 🙂
Thanks for sharing photos of your beautiful gardens!

    Manuela~
Your garden looks so wonderful! Ours is just about finished. We are getting the last bit of Tomatoes and okra and maybe a few more squash. I have a few cantaloupe still on the vine… I hope they make it. The grasshoppers are the worst here, this year!

    happy gardening, Pat

Your garden is so beautiful, I so wish I had a place to grow something like that. I have planted tomatoes. My son and his wife planted their garden just last week, see how far behind our growing season is? It will begin to frost in September, so there are many things that we can’t grow here.
    Hugs, Cindy
