Red, White, and Blue Layered Drink + Straw Flags Craft
Patriotic Straw Flags Craft
Materials
Paper straws (red and blue)
Paper (red and blue construction paper)
Stickers (stars, flags, fireworks, etc.)
Tape or glue (For a fast craft with less mess, use a tape roller! Your flags will set instantly and be ready to use right away.)
Scissors
Directions
1. Using scissors, cut paper into long strips to desired width.
2. Cut each strip down the center widthwise, to create two shorter pieces to work with.
3. About an inch from the top of the straw, wrap one piece of paper around the straw and secure with tape, glue, or a tape roller.
4. Once secure, cut an inverted triangle into the edge. Or have fun with the finishes on the edges! You can try creating fringe cuts or use shaped scissors too!
5. Apply stickers and you are ready to go!
This is a great activity for kids for a Memorial Day or 4th of July party. You can also have them write their names on the back so they know which drink is theirs!
Red, White, and Blue Layered Drink
Any glass will of course do to hold your patriotic layered drink, but I’ve always found it fun to drink out of Mason jars! These drinking Mason jars even have handles to make them easier to drink from!
Ingredients
Lots of ice
Red soda with high sugar content – Red Mountain Dew or Faygo work best
Clear soda such as 7up or Sprite
Sugar free variety of blue Gatorade or Powerade
Instructions
1. Fill the glass all the way to the top with ice. This really helps keep your color layers precise!
2. Pour the red soda slowly into the glass, as close to the side as you can get. Tilting the glass slightly while pouring in the red drink, helps to avoid staining the ice cubes red. Fill until the glass is ⅓ full.
3. Rotate the glass, and pour the clear soda in. Try and pour it over a large ice cube and as slow as you possibly can. Fill until glass is ⅔ full.
4. Finish the drink by slowly pouring in the blue sport drink.
The secret to layering drinks is sugar content. The drink with the highest sugar content will drop to the bottom and the one with the lowest sugar content will stay at the top. Have fun playing around with different drinks with varying sugar content!
