So I think most of us will admit that we love the ease and convenience of a box cake mix, and they can even taste pretty good. But there is nothing like the flavor and texture of a cake made from scratch! And if you are trying to avoid as many artificial ingredients as possible, it’s definitely the way to go. Today I am going to bring you a basic yellow cake that can be made in a variety of flavors with just a little tweaking. Check out my yummy Homemade Yellow Cake recipe!

Want to change up the flavors of this homemade yellow cake recipe? Why not choose a different flavor of extract instead of vanilla, or maybe add some cocoa to make it chocolatey! You could also consider adding some cinnamon and/or nutmeg for a bit of fall flavor!
Homemade Yellow Cake
Makes two cakes, or a single cake with two layers.
Ingredients
2 sticks of butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup brown sugar
2 tsp. vanilla extract
4 eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 T. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
¼ cup water
¾ cup half and half
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350℉.
2. Butter 2 8″ round cake pans generously and coat with a light dusting of flour.
3. Mix softened butter and both sugars in a stand mixer (or in a bowl with a hand mixer) on medium speed until smooth and creamy.
4. Add vanilla, mix well.
5. Incorporate eggs one at a time while running mixer on low.
6. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt until well mixed.
7. Combine water and half and half in a bowl or measuring cup.
8. Alternate adding flour mixture and half and half mixture to the main cake mix until completely combined.
9. Divide and pour cake batter into prepared pans. Tap on the counter to remove air bubbles and evenly spread out batter.
10. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until you can insert a toothpick and it comes out clean. Larger cake pans may cook a bit faster.
11. Cool in pan for ten minutes.
12. Flip and transfer cakes to cooling rack and allow to cool completely.
13. If you want a very flat top on your cake carefully slice away the top to flatten before frosting.
14. Frost your two cakes with your favorite homemade or store bought frosting. If you want to combine the two cakes to make a double layer cake, place one non-frosted cake on top of the other frosted cake, then frost the whole thing.
Enjoy your homemade yellow cake!
