Budget Bathroom Remodel – A Before & After

By Manuela Williams

Hi! When we were planning on selling our house I knew I needed to update the bathroom that we have in the basement and it had to be on a budget!

It still had the original sink from 1967 (which was brown). The toilet was also browny/beige but we replaced that last year with a white one. It a long narrow bathroom with no natural light. Here see for yourself!

I have no idea why I would paint those walls such a dark green??? But I did 11 years ago! This just goes to show you how taste changes!  Here’s the after…

bathroom makeover

The walls were in pretty bad shape because they had never been primed back in the 60’s before putting the original wallpaper on. They were a mess when I took off that old nasty wallpaper! So I had to think of a way of dealing with that issue. I also had to work with the existing beige tiles.

So  to  camouflage the walls I used  Behr Venetian Plaster in a creme color (actually I think it’s called Crema) on top.  I’m not sure you can tell from the photo above but, it has a sheen to it and looks and feels like marble. There are a few videos on YouTube that explain how to use this product if you’re interested. I’ve used it in another bathroom but with a different finishing technique and it looks completely different. So it’s a pretty versatile product (I’m not being compensated to say this in any way – no free product etc). I just like this product.

On the bottom I used beadboard. Which I put right on top of that lattice wallpaper!

Here are a few more pictures:

I know the coral looks green but  it’s really blue. The bathroom is done in blue, brown and white.

I did this makeover very inexpensively by getting  everything off the shelf  either at Home Depot or Lowe’s and the rug is from Sears.

It wasn’t expensive to update this bathroom but it was labor intensive!  That beadboard is a pain to paint and the venetian plaster technique took a while to accomplished. But I’m really happy with the way it turned out and all the real estate agents just loved this room (probably cause it’s my least cluttered room LOL)!

It took us several months to finish this room as we tackled one thing at a time and bought what we needed when we were ready for it.  Ran into a few problems – lighting and having to move plumbing but in the end we love the result!

I love it, Manuela. You did an awesome job (as always)! I just love all the little touches, you always seem to make a room look so special!

That turned out great, Manuela! I love that you put the beadboard up right over the wallpaper. I would have done that too. It looks so light with the new paint and accessories. Thankfully the tile you had to work with was beige and not some funky color or design!

True, the tile in the upstairs hall bath is aqua. Which is teeny bit harder to work around!

Manuela, glad to find your new blog and your bathroom makeover is over the top gorgeous! I love how light and bright it is. I have done the venetian plaster too in a couple of bathrooms because of the same issue with the wallpaper tearing up the sheet rock.

Stopping over from Brenda’s. I’ve been eyeing that Ventian Plaster paint. I have one bathroom with a really cool painted striped pattern to the walls (OK, cool 15 years ago) and I need something to cover up the raised lines from the stripes. I’ll have to check out the youtube videos.

What a fantastic redo! You want to come do mine? I love the way you compensated for the problems in the room and you made such a difference with your choices. Maybe I should get my house ready to sell and then stay – it might be the only way we get all the unfinished projects done!

Well that would be hard as a lot of the items were purchased last year (I started this in Oct/Nov) and those receipts have been filed. I only have the current year’s receipts. I think I saw this same vanity on the front of a recent Lowe’s flyer (even though we got ours at HD) it was $79. I’ll see what I can come up with for the other items.

very pretty, blues and browns are so nice together.
Just wondering if this the bathroom that also hid your pantry and if so, is your pantry still in the bathtub? I always thought it was the cutest pantry!

    • admin says

      May 14, 2011 at 4:00 am

Yes! What a good memory you have. That shower is where my pantry used to be. I moved it into the garage since I knew people would be looking into the shower when viewing the house and also since we were working in there it just wasn’t convenient. I am going to be moving my pantry from the garage to a closet upstairs pretty soon. That shower was they perfect temperature for a pantry but after 10 years I’m tired of going up and down the stairs to get stuff. Because ya know I always go down, come back up and then remember something else and have to go back down!

It looks great Manuela, and I love the colors. I laughed when you mentioned how tastes change over the years… when Audley & I married, I was all about maroon, green and magnolias. Sixteen years later it’s light, soothing colors & natural accents. The beadboard is a great look. Y’all did a wonderful job!

I think I had the same tiles in my last house (circa 1966). You did a really good job with updating this bath for the 21st century! I esp. love the colors and the bead board.
