Well I should say decorating with a shutter in my screened porch, because I only have one shutter to show you today! I got two shutters at a neighborhood garage sale last year (you can see the before here) and yes, it’s taken me over a year to do anything with them. Hopefully I’m not the only slow poke around here when it comes to projects! I love decorating with shutters, so I hope to be able to get to other one soon!
Anyway, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them. There are so many ways you can use old shutters (check out my 10 Ways to Use Old Shutters post if you need ideas).

I repainted it to look chippy and white and hung it next to my patio doors and hung stuff off of it. Like this tin star which I spray painted an apple green (cause green is my screen porch color this year).
We also got this copper clock/thermometer at Home Depot and hung that on the shutter too.
I was only going to use one shutter in here and make the other one into a console table, but I like the way this one looks so much that I’m going to add the other one to the other side!
Besides adding the shutter, I also re-worked my Indoor Succulent Garden
This is what they looked like in March.
And this is what they look like now on my outdoor buffet. I wanted to keep them outside and was looking for a pot and remembered that I had this chamber pot. Which worked perfectly!
I divided a spider plant that made a miraculous comeback (I really thought it died because I had it outside during the winter and it was all brown and dead looking). It bounced back and was a big root bound plant so I divided it up into little plants. I replanted one into a green pot I already had (Target from last year I think) and now it sits on my outdoor buffet.
That’s all that’s new out on my porch until I get that other shutter painted and up!

Love the way it all looks! You inspire me. 🙂
I enjoy spider plants but Miss Victoria for some reason sees them as an enemy. I have to keep them out of range from her paws!

I finally got a vintage window. My neighbor is looking for a door for me. So I guess that just leaves shutters on my list.
Love what you did with them.

You know I’m slow getting around to some projects. In JUNE… I painted some shutters (I’ve yet to blog about them) RED, WHITE, AND BLUE… I was going to put them on my porch…IN TIME FOR THE 4th… didn’t happen.
I ran out of paste wax and as I had painted them with DIY chalk paint, I didn’t want them outside withOUT some type of sealer on them. So… they’re still not finished, the 4th of July has come and gone…and I still have Red, White, and Blue shutters …waiting for wax, waiting to be hung, photgraphed and blogged about. Well…there’s always next year!
Love your shutter…and the green star and THAT GREEN MIRROR! Beautiful.

Much loving all the ways you showed using shutters. They are an awesome base for great projects. I love the shutters that are a little beat up and let them stay that way, just clean them up. Never see them around our neck of the woods at thrift stores. Guess I’ll have to hope somebody at a yard sale will have some. Might look to see if there are any salvage places around, call to find out if they have any shutters. I had to leave several louver doors in KY when we left, oh could I use them now, kills me to think of them. We did use some of them as displays at craft shows in KY.
We used one shutter as a backing for a shelf unit which is great,it’s my faux mantel in our mfg. home living room in western CO now..
Enjoy your blog, you have so much that inspires me. Happy summer.

Thanks JaneEllen! It makes me very happy that you find inspiration here since that’s my goal.
Yes, I lucked out with finding the shutters. I have one decorator and one home stager that live in my neighborhood and they usually have a garage sale every two years or so and I make a point to go to those (I don’t normally do garage sales – I prefer thrift stores). The home stager lady had these old green shutters.
Using a shutter as a backing for a shelf unit sounds great!

I just asked John if he had any old shutters and he does! I have no idea where I’d put them, but it is nice to know. Yours looks scrumptious. Hope that it’s stopped raining down there for a while.

I love it, Manuela! I like the idea of hanging things on the shutter, too. I’m kicking around the idea of getting two for over each nightstand in the guest bedroom and then hanging a picture on the shutters. I just need to find the right size {and two in fairly decent condition}.

I love the way it is another layer on the wall. The clock and star would have looked great on the wall but on the shutter on the wall, well, it looks fabulous!
The green looks really fresh and pretty too!
Thanks for sharing all your great ideas with us!
