20 DIY Painted Kitchen Cabinet Ideas

Painting your kitchen cabinets is a great way to easily and frugally update your kitchen. Here are some things to conisder before you start painting your cabinets:

Scrub first! Give those cabinets a good scrub before you start to take off all the gunk that will affect your paint finish. Without this step, the paint may not stick, may bubble up, or may streak.
Degloss shiny cabinets! Use a deglosser to take varnish or shiny finishes off the cabinets. Your paint won’t stick if you leave it on.
Sanding may be necessary. Sorry to say it, but sanding may be necessary on some cabinet finishes. This is a messy job but you will definitely be glad you did it after since your finish will be smoother and may help it last longer. You can sand by hand, but there are several inexpensive electric sanders that may be worth the investment, especially if you often do painting-based DIYs.
