The Garden Game – A Vintage Gardening Board Game

I thought all you gardeners and lovers of vintage would like to see my Christmas present to myself!

The Garden Game {ACultivatedNest.Com}

It’s a British gardening board game called The Garden Game by Lady Sarah Ponsonby. It’s a rummy style game and was named “best game of the year for 1980″. Isn’t it marvelous! They don’t make beautiful board games like this anymore.

The Garden Game board game

The beautifully designed large board is the garden and has 4 garden beds.

The Garden Game Cards

The object of the game is for  each player to plant Seed Packets in their garden until it’s full, with plants that do best together (companion planting!). The first player that completes their garden wins. But you have to watch out for Acts of God, Weather Reports and other disasters (you could also have an accident go to the hospital)!

The seed cards are beautifully illustrated with various plants and flowers!

They’re planted in the furrows (grooves) of the plots (those white lines on the board)

playing pieces

It has miniature metal garden objects as playing pieces and wooden dice!

It’s a stormy day here in Georgia (we started the day with tornado sirens at 8:30 am), so my daughter and I are going to play The Garden Game and work on our puzzle, bake some cupcakes and probably check the weather channel compulsively until these storms pass through later today!

What are you doing today?

Doesn’t look like we will get much rain here, further South than you. But I do want to get home before it possibly starts, so I can put my kitchen compost in the compost bin.

That is wonderful! I’d be so tempted to display it on a wall, but you play it so that wouldn’t be good. It looks as if it might be edicational as well.

I don’t mean the tornado warnings….hope that the weather straightens up.

That is a great find and sounds like so much fun!! We are patiently (and nervously) waiting on the path of storms to reach us here in South Carolina. Y’all be safe!

What a beautiful game! I know you will enjoy it. The colors are just marvelous.

We had those storms last night — tremendous winds and a lot of rain, but not too bad here in Memphis.

We spent yesterday watching the radar all day long. I’m always glad when the storm fronts pass through. This time, we got a lot of very needed rain & nothing severe.

    I love this game!

What a cute game!! You’re right, they just don’t make games like they use to. I was looking at some of the old games they kids had and they are so bright and colorful and fun! The new ones are just not the same.

Hope the storms passed you all by.

    Take care.

I love that game, lucky you! We are having a yucky, rainy, cold day. I had a friend visiting from out of town and we went to some antique store. Had fun, but it was so cold!

    Pamela says:

Soooo sweet. I would love to have one like this.

LOVE that game! It’s beautiful. I have thought it was my imagination that games are not as pretty as they used to be but I think you are right. They just don’t make them the same (probably cheaper).

I wondered if those tornadoes came near you. I saw on the evening news all the devastation just twenty miles from Atlanta. They were as close as Southern Indiana but we only had heavy rain and very high winds in our area. It sounded scary but it wasn’t.

That game is just lovely and a perfect fit for you, too!
I didn’t get online this morning, but when visiting my mother, she told me “Manuela woke to tornado sirens this morning.” She was concerned because my niece lives in Atlanta.

How pathetic is it when my family gives weather reports from our favorite bloggers. LOL

(Hope all is fine now. We’re under a watch until 1:00 so I assume it has moved out of your area.)

    Manuela says:

Awww! Yes, we are all clear now. We had the sirens twice today but mostly we had a bit of hail at the worst part of the storm and torrential rain. I mean my backyard was flooded! Now we’re under a wind advisory until tomorrow eve. Which you know is always bad in Atlanta after so much rain. No doubt there will be trees falling over tomorrow.

Adairsville was hit hard – the news reports said it was like the movie twister with cars flying around!

    Crazy spring weather in January!!

Hoping all you get is a bit of rain!

Crazy weather all over! Let’s get our precipitation and get this winter over with. I want Spring!!! I’d be happy dreaming of flowers while playing your little garden game though. It’s way cute. What’s your favorite token? I like that little garden fork although I could be happy with the watering can.
