I thought you all might be interested in seeing the progress of the planter that I planted with a triple layer of bulbs last November.

I planted daffodils, tulips and hyacinths in that order one on top of the other. And waited. And waited. And waited! I actually thought the bulbs had rotted or something when suddenly in March the tips of something began appearing!
One hyacinth bloomed out of the six I planted. Well two other tops are up but they look like they’re not going to open up. So far all the tulips have bloomed.
I’m just waiting on the daffodils! This planter is about a month or so behind my bulbs that are in the ground. I wonder if it wasn’t getting enough sun? Next time I’ll skip the hyacinths and plant something else- crocus or snowdrops?
Even though it didn’t turn out exactly as I had envisioned, it was still worthwhile doing. We’ve enjoyed sitting in the kitchen window seat and having such pretty flowers close by to enjoy!
At this time of year I just love going out early in the morning to see what’s new in the garden (I try not to focus on all the things that need to be done!). Even though we’ve had two hard freezes the past couple days the peas and romaine lettuce look good!
The Lady Banks rose is starting to open up – so many of my roses have buds! I’ll take more pictures when it’s fully bloomed but I wanted to snap a pic of the first blossoms. It’s twining up some Crape Myrtles so that should look pretty!
Go check out Ally’s raised beds. She had her husband and dad make her two and I can’t wait to see what she fills them with. She doesn’t live too far from me so we both have to wait until after April 15th to really plant (last frost date). We’ve had a hard freeze two days in a row now but tomorrow it’s suppose to be back in the 70’s! Crazy spring weather!
Edited to add: Every week I keep meaning to join Susan’s Outdoor Wednesday Party ( A Southern Day Dreamer) but never time it right. I just realized that I have an outdoor post so I’m finally joining in!
Oh I am so glad you showed us the bulbs….. It looks lovely and I love that planter…….. don’t you just Lady Banks…. we are going to be 80 today and we had a freeze yesterday…….. yes crazy spring weather….

It looks fun and awesome. I love it. My daffodils came up a couple of weeks ago, we were having such a warm winter. Since then it has snowed twice and I’m afriad they are done! At least I can enjoy pictures, right?
You give me such great ideas. I would have never thought to plant different bulbs in the same planter. Very pretty. I really love the hyacinths. I think those would look great all by themselves.
Your flowers look beautiful! I covered my raised beds the last two nights to protect my lettuce and peas…..We had snow flurries too! My lettuce is only about 1 inch tall right now. You are so far ahead of me. Our last frost date is April 26th here.

Thanks for the update on the planter. That is on my to-do list. My romaine is looking good as well, I have one that was on steroids and is about ready to come out. I guess all of this rain has been great for growing vegetables…and weeds!

Even though it didn’t turn out just the way you invisioned it I love your triple layered pot and will keep that idea in my inspirational folder. Did you leave the pot outdoors during the winter? What zone are you in? I’m not sure a pot outdoors would make it here but then I don’t know too much about flowers.

And they are beautiful. Don’t give up on your bulbs just yet. I planted 2 peonies last Spring and they never surfaced, so thought they rotted. Couple weeks ago I was cleaning out the area I planted them in, and they have started coming up. One looks like it might do ok, but the other is pretty small and weak looking. They may come up for you yet.

It was nice to see how your experiment worked out..Where I live the hyacinths came up first then the daffs and the tulips are just now in bloom. That sounds like Colorado weather – in the 70s one day, freezing the next. It has been an especially dry, on again, off again Spring here. I’m afraid we aren’t going to have any blossoms on the trees, or decent bulb blooms. I’m envious of your planter!!! Sally
I have wanted to do one of those planters with the layers. But, it gets so hot here in Texas & then cold…. I am afraid the poor things would be so confused. I AM! Your flowers are very nice. Yours are coming up sooner. It’s a bit warmer in Ga. than in NC. do I’ll have to wait a little more. I like the hyacinth. I understand they are supposed to be a very fragrant flower. I’ve considered planting some of them too. I love flowers and have so many seeds for this spring. I’m just waiting until danger of the last frost to plant.
