Thrift Store Inspiration

By Manuela Williams

Hi everyone! A few months ago I found this red ticking bedskirt at Goodwill.
dustruffle
It was at about the same time that I decided that I didn’t really like my Blue Toile Room!

bluetoilecomforter
I don’t know what it is but, I love seeing blue and white in other people’s homes. LOVE IT! Tried to do it in my home and never really liked it that much. Same with those rooms that are just shades of white. Love them, every time I try to do anything all white I always wind up adding some color!

So I thought I’d just add the red bedskirt and pair the blue toile comforter with it. I figure it can be blue and red from now on. Then I remembered I had this!

comforterdetail
The bedspread is a vintage one that looks almost like Redwork except instead of the red being stitching it’s chenille. I’ve had this for a long long time!

comforter
The Redwork “Goodnight” pillow is one I ordered from Mary Jane’s Farm Store also many years ago (when I had money to blow on such things – I wouldn’t spend that kind of money now).

Redwork
I got the pretty white pillow sham at a thrift store in town (actually got two shams – the smaller one I use on my chaise in the Screened Porch).
whitepillowsham
This blue toile planter is also from Goodwill.

toileplanter
The lamp I’ve had forever – it may have been from Target. I added the brooches and pearls.

nightstand
The print on the top and the one to right are from….you guessed it…thrift stores.

birdprints
The one with the birds sitting on a fence is a Paul De Longpre. He’s more know for his floral paintings so I was thrilled to find this one.

headboard
The headboard is from the thrift store as is the blue mirror (which I painted blue) and the frame around the “Dream” art piece. The window is a salvage find.
dustruffle2
I’m so much happier with this room now that there’s some red in it! All thanks to my $2.52 Goodwill dustruffle!

guestbedroom
I think this is just the beginning!  I think red and blue toile pillows on the bed would be a nice addition and something I can make myself. Maybe a red or blue shade for the lamp?

So many projects so little time!
Thanks for coming by today! Have a great week!

Hi Manuela! A room has to feel like you…now I'd say this looks more like you. I love the red and white!

You know I'm the same way?! Love blue in other peoples houses but it has to be paired with red in mine or I just don't care for it. The same with the all white rooms. Maybe I dont have the talent to combine the different shades of white and different textures for interest, but my white rooms bore me until I give them a little color. Love this room and all the gorgeous salvage and thrift goods. I have been keeping my eyes open for a bedskirt at the local SA since I saw the one you got for your bedroom:>)

Perfectly my cup of tea, Manuela! Love red and blue. The detail on that window is so pretty. You've made a very cozy room here. Should have it in a magazine for the world to see.

I have a blue and yellow toile spare bedroom, Manuela! It is the smallest bedroom in our house, but I think if I were to do it again, I would stay with the toile, but go with a brown and cream color scheme. I have to say if I see a red and white scheme going on, I would think of it as your signature colors, Manuela!

Love the red can't tell if the walls are yellow or cream either way the red makes everything pop! I don't get to the Salvation Army store too often but you are right, some great finds can be had if you look hard enough. I have always had a blue, actually dark periwinkle kitchen but no other room is ever blue. Even my boys had green rooms when they were kids. Great makeover!!! Thanks for sharing. Meg

It was a WIN/WIN situation. It was beautiful with the blue, and I love it with the red. You have such a great eye for what looks good!

I love the goodnight pillow. My mother has some old handmade ones similar to that that she just pulled out of her grandmother's trunk and used on a bed. The look (of hers and yours) is very restfull and homey with a touch of fun.

Your little room looks so cheerful, now. Sometimes what looks good in someone else' house just is not meant for yours. I have learned that from experience. My house is unique, it feels good in it's colors, only!
I know that sounds wierd, but I really think it's true. The trick is to find what it's colors are. I really need to figure out what to do in my spare room, it is not a happy room right now.;0)
    Hugs, Cindy S

And I am EXACTLY like you, LOVE blue and white in others homes, but it just isn't for me. And I also adore the tone on tone whites, but I need color, especially RED!!! 🙂
