DIY Saturday: Easy Door Handle/Knob Update

By Manuela Williams

I have actually done the DIY I’m featuring today!  A DIY Door Handle Upgrade Using Spray Paint from The Creative Cubby!

We had brass door knobs on all the doors in this house and as we began updating things we started switching out the door knobs. Except our linen closet door was odd and we could never find a door knob that fit the set up (believe me I looked for years). Finally I just decided to spray paint the knob that was on  there. (the photo belongs to The Creative Cubby it is not my doorknob)

DIY spray painted door handle

It’s held up remarkably well – it’s been about 8 years now and it’s just now showing some wear (and we use the knob all the time).  Here’s a very easy and inexpensive way to upgrade your old door hardware (or knobs).

DIY  Spray Painted Door Handles

Supplies:

Rustoleum Spray Paint with Primer
Sanding  Sponges
Cardboard Boxes and Posterboard
Needle Nose Pliers
Philips Head Screwdriver
Mallet

Directions:

For a very thorough tutorial on how to prepare and spray paint your hardware go to The Creative Cubby

(This is basically the way I spray painted mine except I also sprayed the door knob with sealer after the paint had dried)

This looks so much better than the shiny brass! I would love to do this, thanks for sharing:>)

Your handle looks great, and thanks for the reminder I need to do two myself.

Nice update, Manuela! We have those brass lever handles on all the doors in the condo. I can’t imagine having to replace all of them just to change the finish, so this is a good option. Although, they don’t bother me at the moment {and brass is supposedly making a come back of some kind}, it’s nice to know I can spray paint them to change the look and not spend a lot of money. Have a great weekend!

I know! Brass is making a come back in home decor!

LOL, about 5 years ago we replaced all of our downstairs round builder c.1975 “bronze” door handles with the shiny brass lever handles that you show in the “before” photo. I like the look of the shiny brass personally (I just don’t care for dark metal or dark wood) and I really appreciate being able to open the bathroom door with my elbow. I think I’m always just a bit out of synch with the trends.

This just reminds me of when I was raising my boys and how many times the door knobs needed replaced.
One for each kid who was young enough to hang on the kitchen door knob and ruin it.

    They ruined many more things…

But…you reminded me of this one, lol 🙂

I did this with my kitchen cabinet hinges and handles about 5 yrs. ago. They are still looking’ great and it really saved a ton of money.

I’m not a fan of the shiny brass at all, don’t think I ever have been. I love how your handle looks with the rubbed bronze on it, very nice. What an incredible difference spray painting made.
I saw the post last year about the kitchen cabinet pulls that were spray painted like that and jute twine put on middles, really liked that look, all our handles are builder grade cheapy ugly handles so I’m going to spray mine someday. Will need to spray our pendant light over sink also as it’s copper, (got it for nothing where hubs was working when we bought our place). Ours is a mfg. home so we pretty much had to lump it with choices somebody else had made in the house
Little by little we change things. Hubs replaced the knobs for brushed nickel lever handles as arthritis makes it so hard for me to turn round knobs. Not that crazy about the brushed nickel (look kinda officey to me) but they were free also. Hubs was working for a builder at that time. Glad I saw your post to help remind me to paint our handles and kitchen pulls.

Spray paint works wonderfully on light fixtures too!

Believe it or not, brass is making a come back!

Thanks for the reminder – need to add that to my list of things to do.
Hope you are enjoying the weekend.

I love that idea! We have used Rustoleum pain to freshen up flower pots and our patio furniture. We have already replaced our brass door knobs with oiled bronze when we replaced the interior doors last year. We have a faucet that needs to be updated and I may try painting after seeing your handle upate.
