DIY Headboard Ideas

By Manuela Williams

Hello everyone! I’ve been trying to come up with a headboard for my daughter’s new bedroom (she got a new bigger mattress). I had been hunting the thrift stores for a headboard and wasn’t finding any in the size I needed so I thought I’d make one for her (like I need another project!). But in the mean time I thought I’d share some of the DIY headboard ideas I came across in case you’re in a similar situation.

This was my favorite idea. Turning a fireplace mantel into a headboard. Although I wouldn’t put anything on the ledge for fear of it falling down! Here’s the tutorial How to Make a Mantel into a Headboard

DIY Salvaged door headboard

I also love this headboard that used two old doors vertically. Salvaged door head board from Averie Lane.

DIY reclaimed wood headboard from Buckets of Burlap
This is such a cool idea! Make a headboard from reclaimed wood from Buckets of Burlap.

DIY beadboard headboard

This is a great idea since it uses a sheet of beadboard. Tutorial at Monamye.

This is just a curtain rod with a quilt. I liked this idea because it’s easy to change out and would seem comfortable if you’re sitting up and reading.

fence gate headboard

This is using a chain link fence gate as a headboard (don’t know the original source). I thought this was cute and different.

How about just painting a headboard?

I also like this headboard made from shutters because it’s finished off with molding so it’s not just shutters hung behind the bed. Here’s the tutorial – Old Shutters to Headboard.

DIY headboard from The Deuel Family Blog
This is a cute idea and there’s a great tutorial on how to make it at The Deuel Family Blog

Aren’t these all great DIY headboard ideas!

Whatever you do, Manuela, it will be sweet. (I just can’t imagine doing anything because it’s already such a nice piece. I have such a tough time getting out of the box.)

Well, you’ve got lots of options with that headboard, Manuela! I’ll bet even a coat of paint would transform it! Looking forward to seeing what you do wind up doing.

I have a double bed that needs one, but got tired of looking.
    Enjoy your weekend.

I love the headboard Manuela, I know your makeover will be fab – but if it were mine I’d just have to leave it as it is…..

I *love* interesting and unique headboards! I think that the lovely wooden one that you have would be gorgeous with fabric inserts. Can’t wait to see what you do with it!

What great ideas! One thing I’ve seen is a bed pushed right up against a window so that the curtains and window become a headboard (of sorts).

Believe it or not, I’m making my son a headboard this very afternoon!! He wants an upholstered headboard. That’s what we have in our guestroom, and he loves those. Some I’m off to find my glue gun and staple gun. It’ll be fun to see what you come up with!

Love the unique headboard ideas. I made a headboard for my son, out of an old door that came from my grandmother’s old house. It’s a memory for me and goes great with his rustic room. Thanks for stopping by our blog today! We are so glad to have found your blog!

I’d love to decoupage one. I’m thinking about getting some plywood and padding it and stapling fabric, since I don’t have a headboard. These are great ideas, Manuela!

I love all those ideas!! I’ve been wanting to do something like that in my bedroom, just can’t decide what….. there are so many creative ways to go but I my bedroom is very teeny tiny so I’m afraid some of my ideas might just make the room look even more crowded.. so for now I am still without a headboard.

Decoupage a headboard? Oh, don’t even give me the idea. It would totally make my family laugh since Mod Podge is my drug of choice. (No. I don’t mean sniffing…) My older daughter and I were just talking about what kind of head board we wanted to create for her when she ever moves out. (In this economy, I’m not sure when that will be…. sigh.)
