Decorating With Coffee Tins In My Kitchen – New & Vintage

By Manuela Williams

I have this shelf  in my kitchen that I found in a neighbor’s garbage a few years ago that I like to fluff now and then.

I’ve had this vintage coffee tin for a while and then a found a vintage looking one at TJMaxx and so I had to re-do my little kitchen shelf decoration (of course)!

I love the new tin since it has a rooster on it! I also put a few cups that I rarely use on the shelf (which I think is my best garbage day find EVER).

The old looking coffee sign is made by me – it’s really easy to do ! Here’s how I made it:
diysign21.  You are going to print out the words that you want on your sign. So what I do is open Word and start playing with the different fonts and sizes. It all really depends on the size of your sign. To change size you have to type in the size you want in the font size box and then hit enter.

2.To transfer your word(s) onto your sign use either graphite paper which is what I did here or cover the back of your paper with artists charcoal/crayon or if it’s not a lot of letters you can just press real hard and that will leave an indentation of the letters on your wood. I’ve used all these methods and the graphite paper ($2 at Michaels) has been the easiest to work with.

3. Use a dull pencil or something that’s not too pointy and trace over your printed out letters. You should have your board, graphite paper and printed out words in that order.

paintpen

4. Now that your letters are transferred,  all you have to do is fill them in! You can use a brush or  a paint pen if you think your hand isn’t steady enough for a paint brush.

I’ve used them both and I find I like the paint pen better – it’s easier for me to trace around the letters and then fill in. But if you like using a brush, a firm angled one is easiest to use in this application.

Then give the sign a lite sanding  at the edges and over the words to create a worn and aged look. So easy and inexpensive!

Have a great weekend everyone!

      Hi Marty,

Do you – how fun! Well, I love coffee (no matter how bad it’s supposed to be for you) so I thought a little coffee themed vignette would be fun.

That’s a darling shelf! I love shelves over doors. I have one that goes over two bedroom doors and holds most of my McCoy collection. It’s just such a cute and safe place for them. Your tins are really cute and I love your coffee sign. Great job!

Love your shelf- can’t believe someone would throw that away! If they didn’t want it, they could’ve at least donated it. Sheesh. Anyway…you have made the best of it and I love your little vignette with your coffee sign. Is this shelf over a doorway?

      Hi Melanie,

Yes, it’s in the kitchen doorway that leads into the dining room. I think it was a window valance before.

I love that shelf! and I love that you found it in the garbage Lol. I get such a kick out of recycling that way, and I always enjoy telling someone who admires something I have that I found it by the side of the road. Priceless:>) You made sucha cute vignette with the tins and cups and it’s a great way to show off some odds and ends of pretties. Hope you have a great day Manuela!

I cannot believe the things people toss out. I sure don’t see stuff like that in my neighborhood. You always make everything look so cozy.

Love the little sign and the shelf over the door…does it for me!
I’m thinking I should probably put one over the door in my kitchen..going to the living room. There is no actual door there to bang and cause disruption to the shelf. 🙂
That rooster tin is something to crow about! Pat

Once upon a time, I had many many vintage or vintage repro tins that I used to decorate my kitchen. You do tempt me to return to my previous habits…Love the shelf and the sign.
