My family loves Mexican food, which means a lot of tortilla-based recipes! If you usually use store-bought tortillas, you’re missing out! Homemade tortillas are much tastier, cost less per tortilla, and of course you get the added benefit of knowing exactly what’s in them! Follow this Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe and make your Mexican dishes even tastier!

If you find yourself making homemade flour tortillas often, you could easily double the recipe and freeze the excess cooked tortillas. You may also find it easier to make tortillas with a tortilla press. But we made homemade tortillas with a rolling pin for a while before getting a press, so while it’s handy, it’s not required.
Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 cup butter flavored Crisco shortening or non-flavored vegetable shortening
3/4 cups of warm water (approximately)
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, add flour, baking powder, and salt. Give a quick mix with a whisk or fork to help spread out the ingredients.
2. Add shortening, and mix well throughout dry ingredients. You want to create the tiniest of little “shortening beads” in your dough mixture.
3. Slowly add in your water. You probably will not need the full amount of water! Just a bit under 3/4 cups! Mix well until you get a nice tacky ball.
4. Cover and allow to rest 30 – 45 minutes.
5. With a knife, cut the dough into 8 wedges, like that of pie. Roll each wedge into a round ball.
6. With a rolling pin on a lightly floured surface, flatten each dough ball into a thin circular or semi-circular shape.
7. Place a pan over medium heat. Allow approximately 5 minutes for it to heat up before using. You will not need to use any type of spray, grease, or butter. This is a dry cooking technique.
8. Place your tortilla in the hot pan and cook for approximately 30 seconds on each side.
Then you’re all done and ready to enjoy your homemade flour tortillas!

I’ve never made flour tortillas using baking powder. I get light fluffy ones just by kneading the dough enough and having the temperature under my cast iron skillet just the right temp.
