Today’s Thrifty Treasures

By Manuela Williams

Rhoda at Southern Hospitality is hosting Today’s Thrifty Treasures. There’s still time for you to join in and share your yardsale/thriftstore finds! Be sure to check out her blog for all the other participants!

We went to Goodwill on Mother’s Day because the store manager told me to be sure to come but I didn’t find a anything although they did have tons of stuff! I found 3 things that I really liked when I went in the middle of the week though.

First up is this rooster picture. I really liked the frame and I thought it would look great painted black and used with my black cabinet. I didn’t like the mat so I thought I’d either paint it out or use some other paper.

Better don’t you think? I used some checkerboard contact paper to cover the mat and I spray painted the frame black. Unfortunately I broke the glass getting it all back together again!

So I just removed the glass – it doesn’t really matter!

I also found this wonderful ceiling medallion which I’m going to hang in my dining room!

Yep, it was only $3.53 brand new still in the wrapping! I’m really happy to find this one because I’ve been looking at them at Lowe’s and Home Depot for about a year now but never found one that had such nice detail. Plus you can’t beat that price!

The last thing I found was this resin swan planter! I haven’t decided what to plant in it yet (those are some fake flowers). It was $6.96!

I’m blessed with a really great Goodwill which is one of the reasons I don’t yardsale! Plus I’m not a morning person! I really don’t like getting up early which you have to do if you go yardsaling!

Thank you for stopping by to see my thriftstore treasures!

I can’t believe the difference. What insight you had to think to do this! The black and white mat and black frame fits in so well with your black and white pieces.

Lucky you to have a good GW. The only really good stuff I think they EVER had is when I cleaned out my attic last year, had a garage sale,& I donated the leftovers cuz I was too lazy to haul it all back upstairs… Now I could kick myself now for donating it to GW!!! You did some great re-do on your picture frame! Sue

I was tempted by, and passed up, SO many great things at our Goodwill last week. I just talked myself out of them- a little stepstool, one of those 3-tiered hanging baskets, a lazy susan, a cute black wall shelf, a long narrow wooden box… I came home with a teapot, a wire basket, a remnant of beautiful tapestry fabric and a tiny tart pan for my daughter’s play kitchen. Around $6. I’ve been regretting the stuff I left behind ever since! Oh well. It’s hard to know what you NEED sometimes, isn’t it?

  29. Debbie says

    May 11, 2009 at 2:32 pm

I love going to goodwill too. I understand about the getting up early thing too. But sometimes I just gotta do it…lol. I love the rooster pic and the makeover is great. Debbie

Such wonderful deals! The ceiling medallion is great. I love the swan planter too. We used my aunt’s swan planter at my wedding . We put the bridesmaid’s bouquets in it before the wedding and it had the appearance of a large floral arrangement.

Now, I take the ceiling medallion too! I have been stalking them at Home Depot and Lowes. lol

I love what you did with the rooster picture. Looks much better. Too bad about the glass. You can probably find another frame (ugly that you won't want to reuse) with glass for about a dollar or so at the thrift store & reuse the glass in this picture. The ceiling medallion is great too. And I love the swan planter, but I would probably paint it white if it were me. Just a thought. Thanks for visiting my blog & leaving me a comment.
