The Thrift Store Buddha

By Manuela Williams

Ever buy something at the thrift store and not know what to do with it? Hopefully I’m not the only one 🙂  I bought a solid concrete Buddha at Goodwill about a two months ago for the amazing price of $2.41.

It sat in the garage until this week when my husband was straightening up in there and started asking me what I planned on doing with it (and  ahem… a few other items).

So duly motivated (plus the weather has just been gorgeous), I decided for the time being that he would keep my Asian lady statue company.

He needed some plants around him so I divided some ferns and hostas that I already have growing elsewhere. In the spring there’s lots of daffodils, tulips, crocus etc in that bed.

Right across is a nice stone bench under a Redbud tree.

There’s Confederate Jasmine that grows all along the the fence behind the shrubs and the scent is just amazing when it’s in bloom!

Isn’t this Autumn Fern pretty. The new fronds are a coppery color and the older fronds are deep green. The name makes you think it turns a coppery color in Autumn but really it’s mostly coppery in spring when there’s a lot of new growth.

This River Birch is my favorite tree. Isn’t that peeling bark just gorgeous!

Also I have a Beautyberry shrub in that bed that has it’s beautiful purple berries now. Those berries last into late fall/early winter as long as the birds have another source of food (meaning as long as we keep the bird feeders full). I’m trying to propagating this one. Supposedly you can use the berries or root softwood cuttings.  I’m trying both methods and will let you know which works best.

I’m not sure he’s going to stay here but at least he’s out of the garage!

I like both statutes a lot! And your yard is beautiful. So green and peaceful. Tomorrow I shall be repotting plants for my balcony. Much of what I had out there died because of the heat this summer when we were travelling. Will be nice to see green again. Have a great weekend. Tammy

I think he looks very happy there. You have a beautiful, restful little escape right in your backyard. Love it!

Wow, what a find for under $3.00, Manuela! I love statuary in a yard and I have three pieces I am bringing with us when we move.

I don’t have any statues in my yard– but would love a bottle tree!
As for the Beauty bush– we found one of these growing years ago in the pasture/ grove of trees behind our house. My kids and I went for a nature walk with our journals and we drew it in our books. We came home looked on line to discover that the name. It stands up to it’s name.

I once toured a house with a beautiful statuary in the back. I said then that I would love one, but I’ve never started it. Look at you! You’re up to 2. And really? Goodwill? We have nothing but over priced stuff at ours usually.

You got a good price on your buddha! I’m hoping to buy a Beautyberry today as I got the call that they’ve arrived at my local favorite plant store. Yours in so pretty!
