By Manuela Williams

The Crape Myrtles are just magnificent now!

lilac crepe myrtle

This lovely specimen belongs to my neighbor but I get to enjoy it since it’s on the edge of our property lines.

white crepe myrtle

It’s so lovely to have these gorgeous blooms mid summer when everything else is about to wilt in this heat. I think they thrive on heat and humidity!

Not only does it have gorgeous peeling bark, but the blooms are so striking.

 pink crape myrtle bloom

Clusters of flowers! Sort of reminds me of lilacs.

I never even knew these trees existed before moving to the South- now we have 12 of them on our property.

They come in a  variety of colors.

But the white is my favorite! I suppose it’s because I find the white so refreshing to look at in these incredibly hot days of summer.

***We are working on a barn project early in the morning while there’s shade.  Then later, I’m going to start sewing up my chair slipcover – maybe it’ll be finished by Monday!

Have a great weekend everyone!

I think that Crepe Myrtle, Lilacs, and Butterfly bush are all in the same plant family…they are all so lovely and beautiful! When we lived in Florida, I loved them! They grow here in PA as well, which surprised me, but we do have the heat and humidity so they are thriving…I want to get some…I love the pretty colors and the white!

What beautiful trees! You are lucky to have a flowering tree at this time of the summer. I can’t wait to see your finished chair. I have never slipcovered anything, but would like to learn how.

I love Crepe Myrtles! I live in WV & they grow here as well. They actually remind me of Myrtle Beach, SC (a favorite vacation spot for West Virginians), which was aptly named because of all the Crepe Myrtles in the area 🙂

I was hoping to get home this summer (Charleston, South Carolina) and crape myrtles were one of the things I was looking forward to seeing. But I have to push my trip to October, so I’ve enjoyed looking at your pictures. My Mama has Natchez surrounding her patio~so beautiful! Thanks for the visit!

I LOVE crape myrtles. I have three at my house, with the largest being at the side of our house where we can’t really enjoy it. Why the previous owners planted it there is beyond me, and it was already too big to move when we got here. It’s HUGE and I just love staring out my bedroom window at it. I have one of its babies in the back yard and it’s already gaining on it’s momma. They are fuchsia (my favorite!) and we have a purple one in the front, but it hasn’t grown like the pink ones.

I would love to have all the ones you have around your yard! The definitely help make it through the dog days of summer!

Hi Manuela…Those are really pretty Crepe Myrtles! I love them too. Here in Kansas they don’t bloom when everything else is…but then when they do it is so wonderful and beautiful. We had them at our last house…but not here, and I do miss them.

Your crape myrtles are so beautiful! I’m in central Texas, where they also grow well, but I don’t have any on my property yet, I’d really like to plant some. You are so fortunate to have so many beautiful ones – I hear the local gardening shows around here talking about people who improperly prune them, they call it committing “crape murder” lol.

I do love my crepe myrtles. But they’ve made such a mess on my deck! So beautiful though, you’re quite right.

last week we were in North Carolina and fthe crepe myrtles were in full blume. They really do look like my lilac bushes back home. I wish that Michigan was in the right zone for those beautiful bushes.
Thank you for the lovely pictures.

How blessed you are that crepe myrtle grows where you live. And to have SO MANY! Wow! I love blossoming trees and bushes. I have fallen in love with it after seeing it on so many blogs. I was talking to MIllie, a blogger/gardener who lives here in Winnipeg and I asked her if they grow here, no they do not. So disappointing.

I love the white crape myrtles as well… when the wind blows the blossoms whisper down like snowflakes in summer!

    G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S!!!
They are fading here. We’re just that much south of you. I love that flowering tree more than any other one The deep pinks that are almost red are my favorites.

I see that I missed at least one post while on vacation. Heading down to read about nontoxic cleaners and under the sink storage.

I like the watermelon pink color crape myrtles best of all. No doubt because Granny had a very old variety in her yard and it was the loveliest color. I shall miss her flowers almost as much as I miss her. There was an old fashioned tree that was called a Pearl tree, and winter honeysuckle and English dogwood, bridal wreath spirea, two or three altheas…Lots of old fashioned favorites, most all pass along plants. I wasn’t able to get any of those plants to try to root.

Love the new pergola on the barn, too.

    Hi Manuela. :o)
Your trees are just gorgeous as is your neighbors. :o)
We have several crape myrtles too and this winter
I will be able to prune them properly and hopefully
welcome beautiful blooms in the spring and summer.
I really had no idea how to care for them, but now feel
well equipped with as much research I have done.
Always welcoming suggestions though, if you have some
    to share. :o)
    Sincerely, Trish
