Fall Decorating with Johnson Brother’s Friendly Village Plates

By Manuela Williams

I wanted to add a little fall to my kitchen but I really don’t have a lot of counter space. Unfortunately, I need my counter space for essentials and meal preparation! I like the plates I already have hanging on the walls and didn’t want to change them. So I thought I’d add some of my Johnson Brothers “The Friendly Village” plates on top of my cabinets.

This is an old picture where I showed that I painted the inside of my cabinets, but you can see the “before” soup tureens. Below are the “afters”.

I think that’s all I’ll do in this room. I do more Christmas decorating than fall decorating anyway.

So far, all I’ve done in the living room is to add this big candle and change my summer pillows back to my beloved red toile! I missed all my toile!

I’ve had this candle for three years! The candle holder I purchased at Target at an end of season clearance. I think I got the candle either at Pier 1 or Target also at the end of season clearance. That’s really one of my best budget decorating tips. Buy this year for next. I’m planning on being at Hobby Lobby and Target the day after Halloween to buy some things for next year!

The first year I had it I set the candle in some fall potpourri. The second year I think I did acorns, and this year I just twined an acorn garland around the base.

Hope you enjoyed the photos of some budget friendly fall decorating ideas I’ve used in my home!

The plates really compliment your tureens on top of your cabinets and I love the candle with the autumn spray.

I love you cabinets! They look as beautiful on the inside as they do on the outside. And the way you have displayed everything. Just lovely.

I love JB FV. Wanted to collect it at one time, but I have no room to store them. And DH talked me out of it. So I collected fabric instead. 😉

    Hi Manuela –
Those plates are perfect there! I wish my cabinets were open at the top so I could put some pretties up there. Maybe someday we will completely redo the kitchen and make it happen. Your candle is wonderful. I love the simplicity of the garland around it.

I enjoyed seeing the photos of your decor. You do such a great job of accessorizing. The white tureens are displayed very well, and the addition of the brown transferware plates adds just the right touch.

The plates just made the tureens stand out! I love how you use things your have and change them out. We don’t always need to run to the store to get something new! I also love to pick up things at the end of the season for the next year. If you hit it right, you can get it for almost nothing.

    Thanks for great ideas!

I LOVE everything you are showing. 🙂

I started collecting Johnson Brothers plates quite by accident when I’d find one here and there and decided I loved the look (isn’t that how we start collecting almost anything?).

I have that same plate… well, I mean it isn’t YOUR plate and it is MY plate so it isn’t the same… but you know what I mean. 🙂

I’m now using the ones I’ve found for display and to serve my Thanksgiving meal on each year.

Also, I love red toile too and used a lot of it in my dining/family room. See my post here: http://lemonadehere.blogspot.com/2008/09/i-forgot-how-much-i-love-swedish-style.html
Unfortunately, I didn’t like the green I chose for my walls, but I sure like the green you have in your kitchen. What color and brand is that, please?

Your cabinets are very pretty. The autumn decor items around the candle. And the tureens are lovely.

I too buy this year for next. There’s a lot of bargains to be found that way. I actually bought some Christmas gifts for this year before the big day last year. So now, as Christmas grows closer, I have to look for bargains for next year’s presents.

Enjoyed my visit. Have a great weekend.

    Mary
