Poor Pitiful Pumpkin Stencil Project

By Manuela Williams

O.K. so I saw this great pumpkin in the Ballard Catalog. It’s a white pumpkin with a black Fleur de Lis and I thought “I can do that”. I already had a stencil that had a fleur in it, some black craft paint, tape, brush. I’m all set.

Well, I couldn’t get that stencil to sit flat on the pumpkin. I taped it (strapped it down really), I used spray adhesive, I held it down with my fingers, I cut it out and tried all three things again and this is what I got…..

A Big Smooshie Mess!

Then I had the brilliant idea to use a paint pen and trace the shape and then just fill it in. Well that turned out better…..but don’t look too close because it’s still a bit messy! So if you want to put a fleur on a pumpkin buy a rub-on!

My projects don’t always turn out perfect! To take your mind off my P.P.P.P, I’ll show you something that I really like. My fall centerpiece in my dining room.

That’s my fall mantle last year. I layered tons of faux fall fruit (say that fast three times) and veg. Miraculously, my husband didn’t run into it and knock everything down (although he runs into the fireplace at least once a month?). So this year, I took that stuff and put it in that 3-tiered stand I got at the thrift store (my most favorite find so far).

It looks great! Nothing like some creative recycling.

Sorry about the pumpkin fiasco, but it’s wonderful to know that you have your mishaps, too. I had been pretty certain that you were perfect. ;D

Hi Manuela, so your pumpkin didn’t turn out the way you’d planned but,it still looks beautiful. I also love the three tiered stand, shows your fruit perfectly. Deb

Thanks for the heads up on the stencil! I was thinking the same thing; that I could do that with some stencils I have. Note to self: Buy the rub ons! You recovered it very well! And the center piece is beautiful as well! I just have one question about the pumpkin – did you use a real pumpkin and spray paint it? I was thinking I should probably get a craft pumpkin, but yours looks so real. Just wondering in NC. Tina

I love your fall decorations. I opened the box of fall decor and decided it was too hot to even think about decorating. Either that or I am just plain lazy. LOL

Oh, your white pumpkin is beautiful! And we have the same stencil, I see. I had a little problem with getting mine on there too, I'm surprised mine wasn't more smeared.

the rub-ons work great! After I saw the ones you got a HL with the damask design, I knew they would work for my lamp project & they did. I'll post on that next week.

I saw that very same pumpkin in the Ballard catalog and had the very same thought to do it myself! I’ll definitely try outlining first if I do it! Yours turned out very cute, and no one will notice the imperfections. The centerpiece looks great!
