“We Had Everything But Money” – Off The Shelf

I always like seeing what people have on their bookshelves or book recommendations. So every now and then I share what I’m reading because I figure most of you are like me!

Reminisce Books

Normally,  I always have at least 4 or 5 books that I’m reading but I thought I’d tell you just about these two today since they are similar.

selling apples during the Depression

We Had Everything But Money is a compilation of real life stories of people who lived through The Great Depression and The Dust Bowl (which also happened during the Depression). I’m sure some would say it romanticizes the Depression Era since all of the stories are upbeat. Most are about people helping each other & how even though it was a time of great hardship it was also a time that some remember fondly. It’s really a very cheerful and uplifting book seeing how it deals with such a tough time in history.

Here’s a story we all can relate to. It’s called “Creative Mom Turned Drafty House Into Cozy Home”. She went to the creek bank and gathered buckets of clay which she spread over the wallboard in her house. When it dried it was a pale buff color and much nicer looking. Reminds me of Venetian Plaster :) She also worked wallpaper scraps into a pleasing design in one room. They didn’t have a sink so she made one!  I’m sure she’d have a DIY blog if she was around now!

It’s got great photos to go along with the great stories. Here are some other stores that are included:

  • “Hobo Code Directed Hungry Men to Meals  and Caring Strangers”
  • “Depression Years Filled with Courage and Sharing”
  • “Friends Saw Each Other Through Hard Times”
  • “Family Admired Dignity of  ’Thread Man’”
  • “Depression Era Recipes You Can Try Good Old Days in the Kitchen

Good Old Days in the Kitchen is collection of recipes and short stories from the garden, kitchen, and pantries of a simpler time when life didn’t revolve around TV, iphones or computers.

Here’s a recipe from the story “Gathering Greens” in the book:

Dandelion jelly:

Pick 1 quart of fresh dandelion blossoms. (be sure they have not been exposed to pesticides, fertilizers, etc.) Quickly rinse blossoms with cool water to remove any insects. Snip off green collars.

Combine cleaned blossoms in a saucepan with 2 quarts cold water. Bring to a boil and boil for 3 min. set aside to cool.

Strain liquid, pressing petals with fingers to extract juice.

Measure 3 cups dandelion liquid into a saucepan; add 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 1 package (1 3/4 ounces) sure jell. Bring to a boil.

Add 5 1/2 cups sugar, stirring well. Boil for 2 1/2 min, stirring well. Put in jars and seal.

The stories in both books are  short so they are a quick read. I find myself reading a story or two every day. Haven’t tried any of the recipes though.

I bought these books on Amazon and if you search the titles you’ll see lots of other books in the series such as:

  • Tough Times,  Strong Women
  • The Old Time Art of Thrift (I’m getting this next)
  • Making Our Own Fun
  • We Survived and Thrived
  • Good Old Days Remembers – Working on the Farm

These are great books  if you enjoy a trip down memory lane or just want to learn more about the “olden days” !

Off The Shelf

I thought I’d share some of the books that I’m currently reading that may interest you.

“An English Cottage Year” is such a charming little book.  Filled with pretty little illustrations, poems, recipes and tips such as “How to Trim a Hat”. Here’s a page about honeybees.

I’m such an Austenphile and therefore can’t wait to read “In The Garden with Jane Austen”! I’ve looked at all the beautiful garden photos already but am saving the actually reading of the book for next week when we’re supposed to have rain almost every day.  A cozy rainy day spent with  my new Austen book and a cup of coffee or tea sounds like a perfect day!

I found the reading girl print for 99 cents at Goodwill and had to bring her home. I’m not sure where she’ll wind up but I thought she was perfect to include in todays post.

Off The Shelf

I’m always interested in what others are reading so I thought I’d occasionally share what’s on my nightstand these days.  Currently I’m reading mostly books on Urban Homesteading  and self-sufficient living .

I’m really enjoying all of these books  particularly “Quarter Acre Farm: How I  Kept the Patio, Lost the Lawn, and Fed My Family For a Year” . Mostly because it’s a mix of gardening tips,  a memoir of her turning her suburban lot into a mini-farm (what I’d like to do) and very cool recipes. Plus it’s  an easy read (she’s pretty funny).

She has a blog The Quarter Acre Farm where she frequently posts not only more delicious recipes but also quite a few pictures of  her yard and her very funny goose.

I’m  always interested to see how people set things up. I think she has both her front and backyard set up for growing veggies!

I’m not going to review the others as I’m still reading them (I think they all have reviews on Amazon if you’re interested in them). Quarter Acre is the only one  I’ve finished so far.

What are you reading?

Thanks for stopping by today and I hope you all have a great weekend!

A Snowy Cozy Christmas Weekend

We had a really lovely Christmas and I hope you all did too! The thing that made this Christmas super special is that we got snow!!
snowchristmasday
It rarely snows in Atlanta in December and it’s even more rare to get snow on Christmas Day. It was a lovely surprise and made the day even more special for everyone. I think the children in the neighborhood enjoyed the snow more than any presents they received under their trees!

Book Give Away

Hi everyone! I mentioned last month that I would be having another book give away. This month I’m giving a way a copy of Tracey McBride’s fabulous book Frugal Luxuries by the Seasons (Celebrate Holidays with Elegance and Simplicity on Any Income) and Jonni McCoy’s Miserly Moms (Living Well on Less in a Tough Economy -revised edition).

Tracey’s book shows you how to live beautifully and celebrate the seasons on a small income. The book is divided by Part I – Spring’s Promise, Part II – Enchanted Summer, Part III – The Still Small Voice of Autumn and Part IV-The Magic and Majesty of Winter. Some people say she’s a bridge between The Tightwad Gazette books and Martha Stewart! Her books have had a huge influence on me and I’m honored that she stops by this blog now and then. She also has her own wonderful blog Frugal Luxuries by The Seasons.

I chose Miserly Moms to give away because even though I admire Amy Dacyczyn and the The Tightwad Gazette, but that’s not how I live my life or want to live my life. Jonni was a working mom who lived in San Francisco when she originally wrote this book and quit her job to be a stay at home Mom. She looked at frugality as way to achieve that goal. Some people are naturally frugal and enjoy it and some people do it just because they have to. I don’t particularly enjoy it – even though it’s second nature to me at this point in my life. But when we have extra money I generally revert to my non-frugal ways! So I really could relate to Jonni more than Amy. All the advice she gives are things she has done herself. Go to her website for more info Miserly Moms. *In this revised edition, she starts off with a whole chapter of stories about women who stopped working outside the home to be home full-time. So I would just skip that chapter if you don’t think along those same lines. The rest is full of practical advice. Plus, she really did update it and has changed and added things.

Both books are full of wonderful ideas and even recipes! As always, please feel free to enter even if you have the books – they make wonderful gifts!

Just leave a comment on this post and I’ll post the winner Tuesday morning. Next month is another book give away and December’s is an Amazon GC so you can get whatever book you want. Just my way of saying thank you to all who stop by and read my blog. You don’t need a blog to enter, you do need to leave me an email addy if you don’t have a blog. I hope you all have a great weekend!
