Red Wicker

One of my favorite inexpensive ways to get a new look besides re-purposing, is just to move my smaller furniture pieces or accessories from one room to another. My other favorite inexpensive decorating trick is to use spray paint!  Here’s a project that uses both!

How to paint wicker furniture

Sometimes you get tired of the way a room looks  or you get bored with a piece and think about  getting rid of it.

What once worked no longer works for you for many different reasons. Try moving the “whatever”  into another room. You’d be amazed at how moving things around brings new life to them and to the room.

Which brings me to this red wicker chair. It just wasn’t working in my daughter’s downstairs space anymore.

She has a dog crate down there now and bin for Corey’s food/leash/treats/toys  and I’m sure  she’ll be adding clothes for him soon!

She just didn’t have the room for that particular chair but she still needed some sort of extra seating.

So I gave her a smaller, more open  chair from my office and took this one for the living room. I needed the extra seating anyway since we hadn’t replaced my husband’s big leather chair that we got rid of when we moved all the living room furniture around.

I didn’t take a before picture but it’s this $79 Ikea chair and it was  a washed gray color.  Which was very nice neutral color.

But that’s not me! Some spray paint and it’s more me.

It’s easy to change the look of your wicker furniture with a can or two of spray paint! Here’s how I did it:

How to paint wicker furniture

1. take your furniture outside (I didn’t have to clean this beyond vacuuming it with a brush attachment)

2. place on top of a drop cloth

3. shake your spray paint can and then using a side to side sweeping motion, spray paint your furniture

4. be sure to get all angles so that all of the wicker is covered (since it’s a woven pattern and has dimension)

5. allow to dry for at least an hour and then see if you missed any areas and/or need a second coat

Target Christmas Pillow

I don’t usually decorate this early for Christmas. But I was in Target last week and picked up this cute Christmas pillow and didn’t want to have to store it  to only bring it back out in a few weeks.

So actually I did do my two favorite things to get a new look (I painted the chair) AND I moved it to a new place.  Now I need to find a little side table for it!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

I love the chair in red, Manuela! It has so much more personality now.

I love changing things up too–it makes me notice my treasures rather than taking them for granted. I guess that’s partly why I love decorating for the various holidays

    Manuela! this is so cheerful!
What a nice arrangement you have with your daughter. Just switching out furniture…and the Red wonderful. Pat

Manuela, I love, love, LOVE the wicker chair painted red! It’s interesting how the red really brings out the detail. And what a treat to bring it out right here as the season is changing to Christmas! Love the little pillow, so darn adorable!

You are so creative! You always have the best ideas. I love the wicker chair painted red and also love the punched tin around your fireplace, too. I am thinking of trying the same look on my fireplace. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. Vee says

It does look totally you now! I’m amazed that your daughter gave it up. ☺ I need to do some of what you are suggesting, specifically, I need to remove a Volkswagen entirely. Yes, you definitely have my gears turning,

    • Manuela says

Well she did get another chair. She really doesn’t care. She could care less about how her space looks – decorating is not her thing (at this time in her life) :)

  6. says

I love the red! I probably wouldn’t have thought of it, but I really do like it. Don’t blame you for putting out the pillow, it’s cute and it’s almost time!

  7. says

It’s definitely more you in the red color, Manuela! : ) Love the little pillow you found. I do the same thing if I buy something close to a new season or holiday. Plus, if I did put it away, I’m sure I’d forget all about it. So best to leave it out.

Everything is better in red! Lol:>)
I love wicker and red so this is right up my alley. You were able to cover it with only one can of paint? Wow. Nice transformation and cheap too! I am so busy this season, I usually don’t do any CHristmas decorating until after Thanksgiving. But this year I am starting early so I can actually enjoy it and not feel so under pressure to get it done that weekend.

    • Manuela says

Yes, I used the spray paint from Lowe’s. I don’t normally use it (it’s not close by). But the last time we were there I grabbed a couple of cans of the colors I usually use and was pleasantly surprised. No nozzle sticking and sprayed to the last drop! I’m sure if you look closely there are probably places inside the wicker weaving that I didn’t get – but I don’t care :)

I don’t usually start Christmas decorating until after Thanksgiving too, but this year we’re starting to pull stuff out this weekend. My husband is in retail and as you can imagine Christmas is one of the worst times of the year for us (time wise). We’re usually a bit stressed so we think getting an early start might cut down on the stress. My husband loves to light up the house for Christmas so that’s a project that always takes a few days!

    Hi Manuela,

    So nice to meet you!

I can’t tell you how much I LOVE your newly painted wicker chair! For us red devotees, this is pure heaven, right? Everything always looks better in red! Key word: happy!

Thanks for stopping by my place today and for the lovely comment. Look forward to taking a tour of your pretty blog today!

Yes, red does to it justice. It’s lovely and the little Christmas cushion really pops on it. So cute! I love to visit your blog as you are a real inspiration for home decorating. Deb

It’s amazing what a can of spray paint can do! Love the color of course, and love wicker furniture!
You’ve also inspired me with your Billy bookcases. The mister was going to build some cases on either side of our fireplace, now I think I’ll go take a look in Ikea and see what I can find. Mimi

    • Manuela says

Yes, do! You’ll find something I’m sure – they have tons of bookcases. You can easily add trim to the Billy’s to make them look built in. We may at some point add trim to the bottom, top and sides against the wall and change the mantle top to make the whole wall look like a built in.

Spray painting that wicker chair was such a great idea, Manuela! It is much more you this way. My grandmother used to repaint her wicker rocker every year. By hand!

Thanks so much for joining in this week!

  13. says

That chair really pops in red…I wouldn’t have been able to resist putting the pillow with it for a month either! Plus that pillow is “wintery” …it can work before and beyond Christmas :)

  14. says

Great idea.. There’s nothing that a little red paint can’t improve! I have a chair very similar to that from my school classroom. Now it lives in a guest room and it’s calling for a coat of paint!

  15. says

Your beautiful red wicker chair reminds me so much of the turquoise wicker chair in my living room! That’s exactly what I did with mine – spray-painted it. I love the pillow on the chair too, but not the fact that it’s a Christmas pillow, lol. I’ll like it more in about a month. :-)

  16. says

Great transformation of your wicker chair! We will start redecorating our living room soon and I think red is going to be the new colour. The Mister wants to paint one of the walls red, not so scary a prospect when you keep in mind that the wall in question has wainscotting on the bottom half of the wall, and it has 2 windows as well as floor to ceiling stone for the woodstove. Not a lot of wall space left to paint red!

Yours is one of the blogs I’m reading for inspiration in our new decorating endeavour! I just love what you’ve done and how you have incorporated red into your rooms.

Manuela, I DO move things from room to room a LOT!..It most of the time is because I come across a piece thrifting that is a FANTASTIC FIND and it comes in to upgrade a piece that was an I LIKE… The I LOVE piece takes its place and is “just right”…perfect. but the other piece is moved somewhere else, and the Domino Effect takes place. :-) And Spray Paint is my very very good friend. I have been away from blogging for a while…trying to catch up with life changes and recuperate some…I am coming back. :-) :-) Hugs to you. LOVE LOVE that red chair and the pillow. xo

  18. says

I love…love…love RED! Your chair is simply wonderful, Manuela. It just pops with it’s cheery new paint job.
Thanks for our thoughtful comments on my blog…It’s so much fun sharing with another red lover!

I moved some things around last week. Katie and I were talking about some more ‘movin’ I plan to do in my home this week if I get time. After the summer heat, I go a bit project crazy and then I decorate for Christmas and let things settle a bit and come January I’m off and running all over again, lol.
